The evolution of local network computing through wide area networks to the internet meant a unified development
and deployment environment was needed. One such system is java from Sun (©), which is a secure,
hardware-neutral platform allowing web applications to be developed for individual
web servers as well as distributed systems. Java is object-oriented and promotes the resuse of software components known as beans. |

The version for developing distributed systems is called "Enterprise Java Beans (EJB)". With well written beans/EJB's,
application development centres on the creation and deployment of these beans working together.
EJB has inbuilt mechanisms to manage SQL databases and adds a "business rule"
layer between them and the user interface logic. This means that changes in the business rules affect
only one part of the system and the impact as a whole is minimised. |

Enterprise web applications need several separate systems to
work together before any application can be developed. Typically, a web browser would
be used as the front end to a system interacting with SQL databases. Therefore a web server is needed
with an integrated java "servlet engine" to allow web requests
to be translated into the java language. Then an EJB server is needed which must communicate with the servlet engine.
Finally, a database is needed to actually store and retrieve the data and it
must be interfaced with the EJB servers. |
